Little is known of the background of the most prominent English ancestor, Richard Stout. He apparently disagreed with his father as a result of a youthful attachment and either joined or was impressed into the British navy where he served for seven years. Leaving his ship at (then) New Amsterdam, (probably by "jumping ship") he became a Netherlands subject by bearing arms and is listed as "a soldiere at ye fforte in Monmouth." This citizenship apparently stuck, as when the English took over New Amsterdam, he remained unmolested. If they had considered him still English, they would have hanged him out of hand as a deserter.

[Stout, Herald F., Stout and Allied Families, Volume One, (Dover, Ohio, The Eagle Press, 1951), 1]

Richard Stout ran away from home and joined or was pressed into the British Navy where he served for seven years. At New Amsterdam left his ship and through bearing arms, became a Netherlands subject (as eligible for the Huguenot Society.) 1643 Owned plantation #18 at Gravesend. 1664 With eleven others patented a large section of New (East) Jersey by Gov. Biography*A biographical sketch of Richard Stout was written in the "Register in Alphabetical Order, of the Early Settlers of Kings County, Long Island, N.Y." in 1881.
Stout or Stouce, Richard, one of the first settlers of Gravesend in 1643, an allotted plantation lot No. 18 in 1646, as per town rec; d. 1688. He also bought Apl. 5, 1661, plantation log No. 26 of Edward Giffen. With a number of his neighbors he left Gravesend and settled in Middletown, Monmouth County, New Jersey, of which place he was one of the patentees or original purchasers of the Indians, as per 73 of Vol. I. of Raum's N. J. There is a story, founded on tradition, on p. 76, etc., of said Vol., of the shipwreck of a Dutch ship on Sandy Hook; of the crew and passengers leaving a sick young Dutchmen and his wife there while they went for relief; of the Indians tomahawking the man, mangling the wife and leaving her for dead; of her recovering and crawling into a hollow log and subsisting for several days on berries, and then being discovered and taken prisoner and her life preserved by an old Indian, ransomed by the Church of N. Y., where she married Richard Stout, being at the time in her 22nd year and he in his 40th. They settled at Middletown, where the old Indian often visited her, and on one occasion, by informing her of a plot to massacre the whites, put them on their guard and saved the settlement from destruction. This woman, whose maiden name was Penelope Van Prince, lived to the age of 110 years, her prosperity numbering 502 at the time of her death. The compiler gives this tradition as he finds it, having little faith therein. Made his mark to documents.13

Reference*Reference: [Bonham, Howard E., Bonham and Related Family Lines, (Genie Plus, Bradenton, Florida. 1996.), 590.]

In "James Pindall Stout, 1819-1903 and Burthena Shackelford Kemble, 1824-1908", Kemble Stout disagrees with Morgon Edward's history of the Baptist, which reports Penelopes surname as being Van Princis. [p. 291]

Stout reports, "The first record we have of Penelope is in the first volume of the Gravesend Town Book, in September of 1648, after her release from the Indian village, her name appears as "Penelloppey Prince," at the home of Thomas Applegate, who was one of the early refugees to arrive at New Amsterdam. [pp. 292, 293.]

"Prince is an English name and definitely not Dutch.

"The Vicar of Burton-Joyce Parish in Nottinghamshire, England, wrote that the names Prince and Applegate still are found in that part of England.

"There can be little doubt otherwise than that our Penelope was the daughter of the Reverend Mr. Prince, who was banished from his church in Sheffield, England, and who lived for a time in Holland where Penelope was born, which accounts for some Dutch scrivener tacking on the distorted Van Prince for the name Prince with the unwarranted prefix 'Van.' In the second oldest record of the Morgan Edward's history it is stated that the name of Penelope's father was Vanprincis, and the distorition has persisted in all published accounts ever since. Furthermore, it is claimed that a brother of Penelope preceded her to America. Moreover, Penelope must have been a near relative of the Mr. Prince who was the fourth governor of Plymouth as well as a near relative of the Reverend Mr. Prince who was pastor of a church in Massachusetts and whose son was likewise the pastor of the Paul Revere Church in Boston during the American Revolution."

Mr. Stout reasonbly concludes, "... a record is kept of a ship's departure and the name of the ship, its captain and passengers. It seems logical that if Penelope had a first husband she would have remembered his name and passed it on to her family as she did of her injuries." [p. 297.]
