Biography* | A biographical sketch of Paulus Vander Beek was written in the "Register in Alphabetical Order, of the Early Settlers of Kings County, Long Island, N.Y." in 1881. Paulus, the common ancestor of the family, emigrated from Bremen; m. Oct. 9, 1644, Maria or Mary Thomas or Baddie, successively wid. of Thomas Farden and Willem Arianse Bennet of Gowanus; d. 1680. Of Brooklyn in 1655, as per Col. Man; in 1660 a butcher in New Amsterdam; in 1661 farmer of the excise of Long Island; in 1662 ferry-master; Oct. 24, 1663, bought plantation lot No. 17 in Gravesend of Jan Jansen Ver Rhyn, as per Gravesend rec; on assessment roll of Brooklyn of 1675, and patent of 1677, Aug. 6, 1679, he sold to Willem Huyken the one half of a farm in Gowanus formerly of Willem Bradenbent for 3000 guilders. He resided on the farm in Gowanus late of Garret Bergen. Signed his name "Mr. Poulus Van der bek."3 |
