     Paulus, the common ancestor of the family, emigrated from Bremen; m. Oct. 9, 1644, Maria or Mary Thomas or Baddie, successively wid. of Thomas Farden and Willem Arianse Bennet of Gowanus; d. 1680. Of Brooklyn in 1655, as per Col. Man; in 1660 a butcher in New Amsterdam; in 1661 farmer of the excise of Long Island; in 1662 ferry-master; Oct. 24, 1663, bought plantation lot No. 17 in Gravesend of Jan Jansen Ver Rhyn, as per Gravesend rec; on assessment roll of Brooklyn of 1675, and patent of 1677, Aug. 6, 1679, he sold to Willem Huyken the one half of a farm in Gowanus formerly of Willem Bradenbent for 3000 guilders. He resided on the farm in Gowanus late of Garret Bergen. Signed his name "Mr. Poulus Van der bek."3
