Sarah Joris Rapalje1

b. 9 June 1625, d. 16 September 1687
FatherJoris Jansen Rapalje b. b 28 Apr 1604, d. c 1663
MotherCatalina Jeronimus Trico b. 1605, d. 11 Sep 1689
Reference*Reference: [Brøderbund WFT Vol. 1, Ed. 1, Tree #5490, Date of Import: Apr 19, 1997]

BACKGROUND ON SARAH RAPALIE,(SOMETIMES SPELLED RAPALJE OR RAPALYE), the daughter of Jores (George) Jansen Rapalie. Sarah Rapalie was born, according to the family record on the 9th day of June 1625, and who was the first white female child of European parentage born in the colony of New Netherlands, which then covered the present states of New York, New Jersey, and a portion of Connecticut (see footnote 1)

The early historians of New York and locality, led astray by a petition presented by her, April 4, 1656 (when she resided at the Waaleboght), to the governor and council, for some meadows, in which she states that she is the first born Christian daughter in New Netherlands, assert that she was born at the Waaleboght. Judge Benson in his writings even ventures to describe the house where this took place. He says: "on the point of land formed by the cove in Brooklyn, known as the Waaleboght, lying on its westerly side, was built the first house, a one-story log house, on Long Island, and inhabited by Joris Jansen Rapalie, one of the first white settlers on the island, and in which was born Sarah Rapalie, the first white child of European parentage born in the (N.Y) state." In this, if there is any truth in the depositions of Catalyn or Catalyntie Trico (daughter of Jeronomis Trico of Paris), Sarah's mother (a copy of which may be seen on pages 49-50, and 51 of vol. 3 of New York Documentary History), they are clearly mistaken. In her deposition taken on the 14th day of February 1684-5, before Col. Thomas Dongan, governor of the province, seh states that she came over in 1623 or 1624, to the best of her rememberance. In the other, taken "at her house on Long Island, the Wale Bought this 17th day of October, 1688" before William Morris, justice of the peace, she states she was aged about 83 years, and was born at Paris; that in 1623 she came to this country in the ship Unity, commanded by Arien Jorse, that as soon as they came to "Mannatans", now called New York they sent two families and six men to "harford River," two families and six men to Delaware River, eight men they left at New York to take possession, and the rest of the passengers, about eighteen families, went with the ship as far as Albany, the called "Fort Orange". That deponent lived in Albany three years, that in 1626 seh came from Albany and settled in New York, where she lived afterwards for many years, and then came to Long Island where she now lives:

Sarah, therefore, undoubtedly was born at Albany instead of the Waalegoght, and was probably married before she removed to Long Island, there being no reason to suppose that she resided there when a single woman, without her parents.

[Louis Johnes Ryerson, A.M., The Genealogy of the Ryerson Family in America, 1646-1902, (Press of Jenkins and McCowan, New York, New York, 1902), 7.]

In a petition to the Governor and Council asking for certain meadow land, Sara (Rapalje) Bogert stated, "she was the first Christian child born in the New Netherlands." This being dated at the Wallabout, led historians to believe she was born on Long Island. Her statement was confirmed by her mother, who was living in 1688.

Frances P. Kane, 71, deputy commissioner of Chicago’s Department of Public Works, suffered a fatal heart attack Tuesday after he was involved in a minor auto accident on his way to work. Kane, a retired major general of the Illinois National Guard, slumped over in the back seat of a police car at 8:45 a.m. while giving information for an accident report. Patrolman Alan Kieras, who is trained in cardio-pulmonary resuscitation, said he radioed for a fire department ambulance and received Kane three times while awaiting its arrival. Kane lapsed back into unconsciousness while being transported in the ambulance and was dead on arrival in Edgewater Hospital. Kane, who was in charge of the city’s gun registration program, was driving his city-owned vehicle south in the 6900 block of North Sheridan Road at 8:15 a.m. when the accident occurred. Police said a car ahead of him stopped and Kane braked and skidded on wet pavement into the rear of the other auto. Neither motorist was injured and the vehicles suffered only mirror damage, police said. Kieras said Kane and the young woman driver of the other auto were in the back seat of the parked squad car when Kane began breathing heavily, then slumped over. Kane, who was widely known in military circles in Illinois, enlisted in the National Guard’s 33d Infantry Division as a private in 1933. He was commissioned four years later and became commander of an engineering battalion in the unit. Kane went to the southwest Pacific with his unit in 1944 after the National Guard was federalized in World War II. He commanded the guard’s 33d Infantry Division from 1963 until his retirement from military service in 1968.

Mass for Daniel A. Gilbert, 80, retired police captain and former chief investigator for the state’s attorney’s office, will be said at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in Holy Name Cathedral, State and Superior Streets. Gilbert, who had an apartment at 900 N. Lake Shore Dr., but spent much time in Los Angeles and Palm Springs where he had extensive property and contracting interests, died Friday in Wesley Memorial Hospital. Gilbert, who had been described as “the world’s richest cop,” joined the police force in 1918. He was promoted to captain in 1927. He was the chief investigator for the state’s attorney’s office for 18 years, from 1932 to 1950. In 1950, he was defeated as the Democratic candidate for sheriff. As chief investigator for the state’s attorney’s office he headed the staff which gathered the evidence used to convict Roger Touhy in 1934 of the kidnapping of John [Jake the Barber] Factor. Gilbert’s defeat in his bid for sheriff came after disclosures that he had admitted in secret testimony to a Senate committee that he had made a fortune while earning a police captain’s salary. The Senate Rackets Committee, headed by Sen. Estes Kefauver [D., Tenn.], came to Chicago and heard Gilbert testify in secret but the testimony became public before the election. Gilbert testified that he was “a gambler at heart,” and had won “every election bet since 1921.” He admitted that he was worth more than $300,000 but insisted that he had made most of his money in the stock market on tips he obtained from friends. Gilbert was the oldest of eight children and at the age of 11 claimed to be 14-years-old so he could get a job as a wagon boy for Marshall Field & Company. Before he was 18 he was a member of Local 725 of the Baggage and Parcel Delivery Drivers Union. He is survived by his widow, Elizabeth, a son, Stephen, and a sister.
