Schout, Burgomasters and Schepens being assembled Collegialiter in the City Hall of the City of N: Orange on the 10th March Ao 1674, having sent for the skippers and barquires of this City and these appearing, they are informed of the order of the Honble Governor General, that no more than two sloops shall go at one to Willemstadt and Esopus and one to the South River, and that alternately, according as it shall be determined by lot; also that they, the skippers, shall not convey any passengers hence without passport. Whereupon said skippers answered as follows: --

     Jan Schouten answers, that the small sloops ought to be allowed to make one voyage for one of the big ones.

Schepen Isaack Greveraat reequests, that Jurrein Jansen van Auweryck may be heard on the interrogatories, drafted by him regarding the insults committed against him by Catalyntje Rapalje, consisting in abusive language. The W: Court granted the request and the abovenamed Jurrien Jansen is accordingly heard on the interrogatory and answered by him as it appears in the interrogatories. Schepen Greveraet demands support and justice for the insult offered him. Burgomasters and Schepens decree, that the Officer shall repair to the abovenamed Catalyntje and charge her to avoid such hereafter.

At a Court of Schout, Burgomasters and Schepens, holden in the City Hall of the City N: Orange on the first of May, Ao 1674.
Stephanus van Cortland appears in Court for himself and for the remaining skippers and barcquiers; he requests to know, if Abram Lubbertsen's sloop, which Jan Schouten and Symon Baerentsen hired and were with it to the Esopus, shall make two trips, to wit: once for Jan Schouten and once for Abram Lubbertsen. The W. Court decree, that what Abram Lubbertsen's sloop realized in freight shall come into the common fund, and whenever Abram Lubbertsen's turn comes, not Abram Lubbertsen's but Jan Schouten's sloop shall sail in its place; unless the barquiers can otherwise agree amongst themselves.

Bogardus, Notary Public, admitted by the Rt. Hon. Thomas Dongan; Jan Schouten and Sarah Janse, married and now living in this city well known to me and to the witnesses. Being both in good health." They leave all their estate to "the longest liver of the two." If either remarry then one half is to go to the children. Their son Lucas is to have a double share. Their daughter Janetie, wife of Peter Stevenson, is to have only the use of her part, "so long as she is bound to him, her said husband," and is to descend to her son Johanes. "Other children" mentioned but not named.

Patroon Renselaer, in the sum of two hundred and fifty guilders, arising from the purchase of one hundred schepels of wheat delivered to him, Hans Hansen, by Jan Damen, before the execution hereof; which aforesaid sum he, Hans Hansen, promises to pay on the first of April next Ao. 1645.      Hans Hansen Bergen, the ancestor of the Bergen family, was a native of Bergen in Norway, a ship-carpenter by trade, who removed from thence to Holland. From Holland he emigrated in 1633 to New Amsterdam, where he took up his residence working at his trade and at one period cultivating a tobacco plantation, and in 1639 m. Sarah da. of Joris Jansen Rapalie, b. June 9, 1625, at Albany, and reputed to be the first white femail child of European parentage born in the colony. About 1643 removed to his plantation of 400 acres at the Wallabout, for which he obtained a patent on the 30th of March, 1647, and d. about 1654. Made his mark "H" to documents.2

At the date of this marriage he was a resident of the Walabocht. Magistrate of Brooklyn in 1663, '67, and '73; a representative of said town in the Hempstead convention of 1665; and on Gov. Nicolls' patent of Brooklyn of 1667. Apl. 5, 1667, Boaert obtained a confirmatory patent in his own name (instead of the heirs of Hans Hansen) of Hans Hansen Bergen's patent of 200 morgen at the Walabocht. Signed his name "Tenis Gisbertse Bogaert."2

Know All Men By These Presents, That I Jeremiah McCarthy of the City of Chicago, County of Cook, and State of Illinois being of sound and disposing mind and memory and being ever mindful of this frail and transitory life do make publish and declare this to be my last will and testament, herby revoking and annulling any and all former ones if any by me made.
     First: I order and direct that all my just debts and funeral expenses be first fully paid.
     Second: After the payment of my just debts and funeral expenses as set forth in the first paragraph hereof I give, devise, and bequeath unto my beloved wife Bridget A. McCarthy all of my property of every kind, character and description Real, Personal and mixed and every part thereof to have and to hold the same unto her the said Bridget A. McCarthy, her heirs executors administrators and assigns forever.
     Third: I hereby appoint my said wife Bridget A. McCarthy as executrix of this my Last Will and Testament and request and desire that she be not required to give any bond for her faithful performance as executrix of this my Last Will and Testament.
     In Witness Whereof I Jeremiah McCarthy said testator have hereunto subscribed my name and affixed my seal this twenty second (22nd) day of August in the year of our Lord One Thousand Nine Hundred and Six (AD 1906).

Feb. 10, 1660, he sold to Wm. Goulder plantation-lot No. 3 in Gavesend., as per town rec. Resided on Staten Island in 1689. A Derrick Cornelissen bought a tract of the Indians at Chesquakes, N. J. Signed his name "Dirck Cornellissen Hoochlandt."2

He resided in New York or "Breucklein" until he was about 38 years of age. He is recorded as a church member in Brooklyn in 1698. In the early part of 1707, or subsequent to November 1706, he removed to Hackensack, New Jersey, and resided in that vicinity a number of years. He was freeholder as early as 1715, and a Justice in 1724, being successively re-appointed up to as late as 1750.
