The visits were vacation and free holidays that we had while constructing the large pipe coating plants at Leith-Edinburgh, Scotland for British Pipe Coaters and British Gas Ltd. Of special interest to all persons that are researching the "Thatcher" family. Dennis Thatcher, husband of Margart Thatcher,ex-Prime Minister, is an Uffington Thatcher. Of other special interest is the copy of the will of Jane Thatcher, dated XXIII March 1598. She is at rest in the Thatcher section of the grave yard that is around the church. In fact many of the Thatcher name plates are fixed on the side of the church building, besides the Thatcher grave sites. A copy of Jane Thatcher's will can be found in this CD disc, under her name and the sub section of "more about". The will lists the names of her son's, their wives and a nephew named Richard Thatcher. The name Uffington Wooldstone I used as a computer section to be able to store and list all information that did not tie direct to one person. In the old records of the Thatchers, many times I found on death or birth records the Thatcher's were listed by their first name and then given the added word -- such as-- Richard, a Wooldstone Thatcher or Jane, an Uffington Thatcher. Other times on death dated I have found Oliver, the elder one, an Wooldstone Thatcher. Uffington and Wooldstone were within a short walking distance of each other, both had their own church and church records. -------------------------------------- Thatcher Coat of Arms Heraldic Description: Arms: Cules, a cross moline argent; on a chief d'or, three grasshppers proper. Crest: A grasshopper, proper, resting on a helmet, visor closed. Authority: Burke's general armories 1844 and 1878 editions. Fairbairn's Crests 19ll edition. Symbols: Cules (red) Bravery Argent (silver) Peace Or (green) Hope Ppr (Proper or natural colors) "Cedant Arma Togue, Concedant Laurea Linguae" (The power of arms yielding to that of the church, let the eloquence of the pulpit take the place of the arbitrament of force.) Charles R Thatcher 8/26/1997 _____Mr Thatcher has a English copy in full color of the above. ____________________________ 8/27/1997 The Uffington -Wooldstone Thatchers In the summer of 1976 Leonard Thatcher and his daughter, Mrs Georgia Seeliger, visited Uffington Church. While there Leonard purchased the last two copies (booklets) of the: The Annual and Triennial Visitation -Presentments for Uffington, Baulking and Wooldstone by The Parish Churchwardens. In these booklets and reports were found that the Thatchers were church wardens in both Uffington and Walldstone for many years. The first Thatcher I found listed was in 1634 and under the heading "The Terrier of the possessions of the sayed church and the two chappels here-under written." Then the following several items from the report. Item # 1-- "the tythe of three acres in the hangings of Sower Hill unto Dragginge Hill excepting a headland halfe in the lower end of the said Sower Hill noew in tenure of Bartram Thatcher and alsoe one other halfe next Blakes crosse was shootinge upon Ickleton way." Item # 2- "the tythe of one acre and a butte in the East combes late in the tenure of Oliver Thatcher, now of his assinges." Item # 3 - "they tythe corne, hay, wooll and lambs belonge unto Mr. Saunders Esgr. by impropration" signed by Fran. Hawkins, Vicarius Arnold Thatcher, Guardian --------------------------------------------- notes on the above Headland - strip abutting at right - angle on another, or an irregular shaped piece of land. Shoting upon - boardering upon. Guarding - a Churchwarden The next date when Thatchers were mentioned was in October 1641 where Richard Thatcher signed as a Churchwarden of Uffington and Arnold Thatcher signed as a Churchwarden of Wooldstone. Amoung other things the church reports listed the sinners and also their sins. The following is a copy from the first (# 1 booklet) . "Uffington in Countie Berks 1665" Listing the names of those that come not to the place of public worship to hear Divine Services and Sermon. Oliver Lock and his wife. Richard Ballard and his wife William Ballard The wife of John Johnson Thos. Thatcher, the younger. ---------------------------- The last time a Thatcher was mentioned in these booklets was Thos. Thatcher on May 11, 1791. ------------------------ From the Bishop's transcrips I found listed Baptims, Burials and Marriages of twenty-seven Thatchers from April 18, 1612 to April 5, 1638. I found no births listed in any of the records. The earliest Thatcher I found recorded was Ann Thatcher, daughter of Wm. Thatcher who was baptised on April 18, 1612. ----------------------- In the Parish Registers the baptisms of twenty-two Thatchers from 1659 to 1679, and the marriages of ten Thatchers from 1664 to 1703, and the burials of twenty-seven Thatchers from 1654 to 1678 were recorded. August 28, 1997 by CRThatcher, Indianapolis IN from files of Leonard G W Thatcher. ----------------- September 3, 1997 from notes of Charles Robert Thatcher, b 8\26-1922 Taken from a visit to Uffington, England during March 1977. Staying at the Westminister Hotel in London--Charles, Alice and our daughter Amy took a private car and driver to visit the Uffington area. We first took the train from London to Oxford, then the car and driver on to Uffington. Uffington located some odd 18 miles southwest of Oxford. The small village is located in the center of "Vale of the White Horse" , a large smooth valley of fine grass land and farming soils. Many of the estates are now horse farms for the breeding and training of race horses. On the north slope of a rather high hill south of Uffington and looking to the north, you can see the huge shape of the white horse made from the Roman's visits of earlier times. The soil had been taken off to let the white base stone expose the shape of the horse. I was told while in Uffington, that during World War II, the horse had to be covered up, as the German airo command was using the horse as a mapping point for their air raids in England. Uffington is a small and very beautiful English village, located near other larger towns in England--Swindon-to the west, Wantage-to the east, Farington- to the north, Hungerford-to the south side, on a large scale map. In the center of the old section of Uffington we located "The Parish Church of St.Mary-Uffington". Walking up the small gravel path, we passed amoung the head stones of many who are buried on the church grounds. Entrance into the church proper was by the small entrance door at the south Transept. We were amazed at the excellent condition of the interior of the church which is in daily service yet today. The church dates back into the 13th Century, with improvements made in the 14th Century and improvements into the following years to provide the church as it is today. taken from the booklet 'The Parish Church of St Mary Uffington ' from a 1964 reprinting copy. The three ancient churches of Uffington, Wooldstone, and Baulking have been wonderfully preserved in their original forms through some seven centuries. - from Vicar , the Rev. J.E. Bailey -1964- "As you look down from White Horse Hill with its symbol of pagan worship, you see nestling below it the village of Uffington dominated by the symbol of the worship of the True God --the Cruciform Church of St. Mary. We in the village are fortunate to have so close to us that first symbol of a heathen age, but it is in the second that we find our salvation and peace. St. Mary's Vicarage, Uffington 1964 ----- Inside of the church was several silver plates and cups, one item was a pewter salver incribed "Tho. Thatcher and Rich. Gerring--Churchwardens 1790. -------- Regarding the church clock-- first record concerning the church clock was in 1626, when Richard Ballard was paid '2,6d for mending ye clock...... From 1664 to 1670 Ambrose Thatcher was 'keeping ye clock.......... The old clock was restored to working condition in 1969 , the efforts of Mr D.F. Nettell and Mr. E. Packer. The plinth was made by W. Smith and the materials cupplied by A.J. Wright. ----- ----- The Church Registers dated from 1654 --one item 28 July 1667, contained a receipt for 5/ - by Eleanor Thatcher, widow, for two seats in the church transfered to Mr George Read, 26 March 1688, this along with a list on the sheet with names of persons that had be excommunicated by Robert Green, vicar, 28 July 1667. This was the time that several of the Thatchers were involved in the movement of the Society if Friends -Quakers. It was from this stern demand from the Church that caused much of the unrest that promoted many, from this small English village to seek freedom from the church. Their vision of this freedom of religion led the way to America. ---- The All Saints Church at Woolstone deep in the Vale of the White Horse dates back to about 1195. This church was build of chalk and clunch and has stone quoins and dressing. The walls were originally rough-cast but are now stripped. The old, old spelling was "Wooldstone." ------- The Parish Church of St Nicholas --Baulking--is of 13th. Century construction. ----- The above was from one of several visits that I have had to the Uffington area, We have several color photos, and pages of more information in our paper files. This we shall be glad to share with any with interest in this area. Reference* | Reference: [John T. Snyder, Thatcher Family, (http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Estates/2360/index.htm), "Electronic."] Information from Helen Rowell indicates that court records tell rather sad story of American intolerance for the handicapped - and it might be added for non-Quakers. There is no doubt that Richard, Jr. was somehow mentally impaired and yet a very, very hard worker. Their first year in America was fraught with hardships, so much so that Richard, Jr. and Bartholomew were "put out" to work for room and board with Israel Taylor, who would provide sustenance in exchange for work ( it turned out to be dirty work). Israel and his wife had to give them what they needed most - a roof over their heads. For the next few years, after he left the Taylors, court records show that he was systematically stripped of the fruits of his labor: fence rails, fines as high as 50 pounds, apple trees - anything he produced and/or earned was taken from and he was jailed and publicly whipped. The worst story of what happened to this luckless young man involves Richard progressing down a certain road one day when he met a man from West Jersey who proceeded to sell him a roan horse. Said roan horse was stolen as proved in court. Richard was caught and punished severely. Several weeks later a good Quaker gentleman was proceeding down the same road and at the same spot, on the same road as Richard's encounter, met the same man with the same horse which he sold to that Quaker. The horse proved to be stolen form the same man as had owned said horse which Richard was convicted for having purchased. The Quaker was exonerated, of course! For such seems to have been the means to fame and fortune for many of the public officials and solid citizens who were Quakers in Bucks County, Pennsylvania in the 1680's and 1690's. Society in that day did not countenance non-Quakers and this family would appear to have been that, but also Sabbath breakers for which they were roundly punished and always fined. Nellie Thatcher believed that Richard Jr. was that way because of an untimely crack on the head received who-knows-how or when. In the back of her mind she thought it was a fall from a wagon. |
