All continued the same as the manors (beadlewicks) were in the possession of the Archbishop of Canterberry as units, until the reign of Henry VIII (1509) 1. Beadlewick of Ranscome (35) Henry VIII, was exchanged from the then Archbishop to Sir John Gage, Knt, Ancestor of the present Viscount Gage. 2. Beadlewick of Ringmer, with Brouyle Park, part of the waste land, was about the beginning of ( 1558) Queen Elizabeth reign, exchanged by the Archbishop with her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, for a Manor and lands near Crayton. In turn the Queen set up a district Court Baron for each of the districts, and at that time the land title was changed from a beadlewick to a manor. Each manor had an appointed Court Baron. In the 3rd. year of the reign of James I, (1606) the manor of Ringmer was granted by the King James I to Edward, the Earl of Worcester, and Sir Robert Johnson, Knt. They in turn sold the manor of Ringmer to Sir John Rivers. In the same year Sir John sold it to Thomas, Earl of Dorset who sold it to John Thatcher, of St. Olave, Southwick, Brighton, Ann Agnes, father was Sir John Gage. He was installed knight of the Garter on 22 May 32d Henry VIII ab 1556 bu at Firle Co Sussex England ............................. The John Thatcher, estate at Ringmer, had a total of over 1100 acres. . . . . It was the thing in those days to have your daughter marry a Knt. and acquire a title into a more firm position in the social structure of the church. . . . . . I do not quite understand why, some of the Thatcher lines that appear in England during the late 1400-1700 years had such a different outlook on their lives. I find in some complete loyality to the church, in others complete loyality to the crown, in others complete desire for freedom from both the crown and the church. Perhaps, as in life today, some were blessed with being in the right or wrong place at a certain time of their mortal lives. crthatcher 9-6-1997 ..... I would now make this suggestion: That any person that wants to dig deeper into the English Thatchers, should also dig deep into the history of England from 1400 to 1750. This into the area of the Kings-Queens, the Church of England, Archbishop of Canterbury, owner-ship of the land, who took care of the lands, who loaned the crown money, what were the prices paid for marriage into the royal line of loyality, to the church, crown or friendship. As has always been said "the Crown (Kings and Queens reign but do not rule," I feel this is not the exact fact--it seems that much of England and what happened in English history, has been guided by the royal hand, either above board, or under the table. Many times this has had a positive effect and at other times a very bad effect on those involved. |
