Thomas R. Ackerman, 83, of Mt. Prospect, a retired insurance broker, died at ManorCare nursing home in Rolling Meadows Tuesday of complications from a stroke. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., and raised in Chicago, he graduated from Von Steuben High School in Chicago. After high school he worked in the mailroom of Kemper Insurance in Chicago and eventually joined the claims department. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army's Counter Intelligence Corps in the Pacific. Upon his return to Illinois, Mr. Ackerman established his own insurance agency in Mt. Prospect and worked as a broker, claims adjuster and insurance investigator. In the 1960s Mr. Ackerman served as justice of the peace in Wheeling Township and served for several years on the Mt. Prospect Board of Fire and Police Commissioners. "He was a very civic-minded person," said his son Dan, "a generous, affable man." Mr. Ackerman helped organize the town's first 4th of July parade. Other survivors include his wife, Annamae; two daughters, Joan Ackerman-Zimny and Diane Podraza Moore; and seven grandchildren. Visitation will be held from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday in Friedrichs Funeral Home, 320 W. Central Rd., Mt. Prospect, and from 9 to 10 a.m. Monday. Mass will be said at 10 a.m. in St. Raymond De Penafort Catholic Church, 301 S. I-Oka Ave., Mt. Prospect.

A funeral Mass for Thomas R. Ackerman, 83, will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, at St. Raymond Church, Elmhurst Road (Route 83) at Lincoln Street, Mount Prospect. Born Sept. 26, 1918, in Brooklyn, N.Y., he died Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2001, at ManorCare in Rolling Meadows. Interment will be in All Saints Cemetery, Des Plaines. Mr. Ackerman, a longtime Mount Prospect resident, was a World War II veteran who served in the Counter Intelligence Corps. He was active in the CIC organization of Chicago for many years. He was a member of the American Legion, Post 525. Mr. Ackerman established and independent insurance agency and worked as a broker, claims adjustor and insurance investigator. He was formerly active in the Mount Prospect Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of the Special Agents Association of Chicago, the Association of Federal Investigators and the Casualty Adjusters Organization. Mr. Ackerman served as Justice of the Peace in Wheeling Township, and on the Mount Prospect Board of Fire and Police Commissioners. Always full of energy and generous with his time, Mr. Ackerman was a devoted family member and friend.
