Anecdote*Robert Periolat, the 3rd child of Napoleon Periolat & Salome Degen Sigwalt, married Dora Schaefer. They lived in one of the only two brick houses in Wheeling. It was on a large piece of land with a great number of trees, mostly fruit & one huge poplar. Immediately around the house were flowers & shrubs. Beside the kitchen was an old fashioned chain pump that brought up clear, cold drinking water. Beside the outside cellar doors was the smoke house, where they cured their hams & bacon. Behind this was an old fashioned garden with a fence around it with a tiny gate. That garden leaves a remembrance of lovely colors & sweet odors that the finest formal garden cannot equal. Theirs was a happy home. Aunt Dora always welcomed one with sparkling eyes & a happy smile.

There is romance connected with Uncle Robert & Aunt Dora that is worth telling. When Robert returned from the Civil War, Dora spied him as his company marched down the street. She ran up to him & marched beside him. Later, her parents chose a mate for her—a well to do farmer, which discouraged Robert’s attentions. Dora’s home was across the way from the old Periolat home & brewery, so Robert was a close neighbor. One evening, a cousin, Julia Dumser, was visiting the Periolats. Knowing of Robert’s fondness for Dora, Julia tried to help him. It was a warm night with a summer storm approaching. As the lightening flashed, they saw Dora sitting on a bench alone, beside the house. Julia tried to persuade Robert to go over to Dora & ask for her hand. He was too timid. Finally, after much coaxing, she took his hand, led him over to Dora’s gate and left him there. They became engaged that night. Robert & Dora had two sons. George is now vice president of Crane & Co. Willie works in banking.4

Anecdote*Henry Periolat, the 2nd child of Napoleon Periolate & Salome Degen Sigwalt, married Margaret Reterer. He lived in the old family home with his mother after his father, Napoleon, died. He & his brother, Robert had learned the brewing business. They carried on the interesting old brewery. Henry was a quiet, shy man, and usually sat at a window of the brewery in the office, while Robert, when not busy, stood at the wide loading door, in his leather apron, one foot on the sill, looking very much like pictures of Falstaff, as he & Henry were both very stout. They were always cordial to visitors. The nieces from Chicago spent many happy summers there & thought it great fun to go down in the cool, damp cellar to have a glass of luscious, foaming beer.

Henry & Margaret had nine children, five boys & four girls. Charlie, the 2nd oldest went to California for one dollar when the railroads were cutting prices. He stayed there until his death in 1930. Alvina, the 3rd child, also went to California. She married Ed Sproohnle, of Chicago, and still lives in Los Angeles. The rest of the family settled either in Wheeling or Chicago. Lillie, the 5th child, married Herman Hartman. For many years they ran the Wheeling House & later, a larger place called Hartman House. She was one of the first on the Milwaukee road to serve the famous chicken dinners.3

Anecdote*Josephine Periolat, the first child of Napoleon Periolat & Salome Degen Sigwalt, married Charles Vogt. They had one child who died in infancy. They lived in Wheeling, ran the Post Office and owned the town store, where everything could be bought from a mouse trap or clay pipe to calico & sugar. This store was the gathering place of the older married men of the town. They would sit around the old stove & swap storied & relive the Civil War—the chief spokesman being Uncle Louis Fischer, who was judge, sheriff, grandmaster of the Lodge & highly respected citizen. He was a brother-in-law to Josephine. He had been at the Battle of Gettysburg & loved to talk of the Civil War. He was a faithful reader of the weekly New York World & was up on the world news.

Early in their married life, Josephine & Charles adopted a girl. Later, they adopted the son of the church sexton, who was a widower. Josephine was a grand woman, always ready to help anyone in trouble, at any time of the day or night. Her later years were spent in a large white frame house set in a grove of trees, many apple & some cherry. Many a happy family gathering was held under those trees, where there were hammocks & chairs. Wheeling was never the same after Josephine & her brothers & sisters died.3
