Obituary* | His obituary was published 16 June 1900 in the "Dubuque Herald" (Dubuque, Iowa),1 |
Obit-Text* | The following is a transcription of that obituary: The death of William J. Carney, aged 22 years, youngest son of Justice Frank Carney, occurred Thursday night at 11 o’clock at the family residence on Clay street. Surrounded by the grief-stricken family, “Willie,” as he was familiarly called by all who knew the manly young fellow, passed to the great beyond. He had been ill for two months, but in all this time he was about as usual, visiting with his friends and filled with the hope that he might soon be well. When questioned as to how he was getting on, he would always replay, “I am feeling much better.” 1 Willie was the favorite of the family. His quiet, unassuming manner endeared him not only to his immediate relatives, but to the large circle of friends who sincerely regret his death. Truly of him it might be said, “None knew him but to love him; none named him but to praise.” No complaint ever passed his lips during his illness and so calm and peaceful was the end that the sorrowing parents, sisters and brother scarcely realized that the Angel of Death had claimed him for his own. Willie was for two years in the employ of Bennett Bros., and later with James B. Mulkern, undertakers. His employers speak in the highest terms of his conscientious work, and in every instance where he was called upon to officiate in his business capacity his ready word of hearty sympathy seemed to lighten the burden of the bereaved. Words of consolation to the bereft parents seem futile at a time like this, but the sympathy of a legion of friends is extended to them in their great grief. The surviving members of the family are Mrs. B. J. Schwind, Miss Grace, and Frank, manager of the Western Union at Elgin, who has been advised of the sad news and who will arrive tonight. The funeral will be held Sunday morning at 9 o’clock. Mass will be celebrated at St. Patrick’s church, and interment will take place in Key West cemetery. Undertaker Mulkern will have charge of the arrangements. |

Burial* | William J. Carney was buried on 17 June 1900 at Key West Cemetery located in Dubuque, Dubuque County, Iowa.1 |

Death* | Joseph C. Erhard died in 1909 at Manhattan, Will County, Illinois. Joseph's cause of death was a revolver shot.5 |
NewspaperArticle* | Joseph is mentioned in the newspaper article"Mystery in an Illinois Death" published 17 December 1909 in the "Cook County Herald" (Arlington Heights, Illinois). Joseph Erhard, Jr., 29 years of age, is dead from a revolver shot through his home near Manhattan, and his demented brother, Lawrence Erhard, has been taken to the Kankakee Insane Asylum. Mysterious circumstances shroud Erhard's death, and the coroner's jury added to the confusion, by returning a verdict of accidental death. Lawrence Erhard was released from the asylum in August under parole to his parents. The other day he was in an ugly mood and could not be controlled. Word was sent to the sheriff's office to come and get him. One night at midnight Joseph Erhard was left sleeping behind a stove in the sitting room by other members of the family, who had gone into the kitchen. A few moments later a pistol shot was heard and Erhard was found shot. The revolver, lying near, was owned by the dead man, but he was never known to carry it. At the inquest no mention was made of Lawrence Erhard, who was then in the house under guard. Relatives will not discuss the affair.5 |
