Obit-Text* | The following is a transcription of that obituary: Joseph W. Mooney, a longtime insurance agent who was a former mayor of University City, died Thursday (June 4, 1998) at his home in Clayton after a heart attack. He was 81. Mr. Mooney was an agent for 58 years with the New York Life Insurance Co. He served one term as a councilman in University City and was elected the city's mayor from 1978 to 1986. At the start of his term as mayor, he won the first-place seniors trophy in the city's annual Memorial Day run. After Mr. Mooney left office, he helped city officials raise money to restore the city's lion gates as part of the restoration of the Civic Plaza Historic District. He had served on the storm-water and infrastructure subcommittee of the Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District and more recently on a county group that oversees cable-television operations. University City officials named a park at Delmar Boulevard and Jackson Avenue for him in 1988. Born and reared in St. Louis, Mr. Mooney served in the Civilian Conservation Corps. He also served in the Navy and in the Army Air Forces as a navigator in World War II. He joined New York Life in 1940 and resumed his career with the company after the war. In the mid-1930s, he attended the University of Missouri at Rolla. In 1975, he was awarded an engineering degree by the university, and in 1985, he received the chancellor medal for his contributions to the university and to the Rolla community. He was a past president of the university's national alumni association. He was a member of the Serra Club, a Catholic group, and served on the boards of numerous charitable groups, including St. Joseph Institute for the Deaf. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Lupton Chapel, 7233 Delmar Boulevard, University City. The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 106 North Meramec Avenue, Clayton. Burial will be at Resurrection Cemetery. He was married for 46 years to Margaret McCarthy Mooney; she died in 1992. Among the survivors are his wife, Mary Ellen Mooney; a daughter, Catherine M. Mooney of Richmond, Va; five sons, Joseph W. Mooney III of University City, Frank J. Mooney of south St. Louis County, Lawrence E. Mooney and James S. Mooney, both of Clayton, and Robert B. Mooney of University Heights, Ohio; five stepdaughters, Ellen Hyde of Kansas City, Molly Henry of Webster Groves, Cindy Doherty of Atlanta, Joan Potter of Kansas City, Kan., and Chris Hyde of Lawrence, Kan; three stepsons, Dave Hyde of Kirkwood, John Hyde of Warson Woods and Bill Hyde of St. Louis; a brother, Edward Mooney of Des Peres; a sister, Margaret Keely of Kirkwood; and 20 grandchildren.
