Biography*A biographical sketch of Joseph Augustus Wrigley was written in the "The Descendants of Joseph A. Wrigley" in 1968.
Joseph A. Wrigley, Sr., born in Oldham, England, came to the United States as a young, unmarried man. He met and married Elizabeth McNamara, of County Cavan, Ireland, in the United States. The dates of their arrivals and of their marriage has not been established at theme of the compiling of this record.
Joseph A. Wrigley and his wife returned to Europe and on this trip (the second crossing for each of them but the first together, or as man and wife), their first child, Rosetta, was born; the date, August 29, 1850.
They landed at Liverpool and there, Joseph Wrigley represented the Erie Railroad, an American railroad he had arranged to represent as a land agent before sailing for England.
It was while Joseph Wrigley and wife resided in England after this trip, that their son, Joseph A. Wrigley, Jr., was born; his birthdate was April 9, 1854.
Also while residing in England, a second son, John Thomas Wrigley, was born. His birthplace was Oldham, England, the date of his birth, April 5, 1858. The final crossing to return and make the United States their permanent home, was in 1859; this date has been established from the fact that the infant son, John Thomas, took his first steps aboard vessel on this voyage (children begin learning to walk about the age of one year).
The Joseph Wrigleys made their home, after landing from this trip, at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It was there that a third son, William Henry Wrigley, was born. Sometime after, the date is not known at this time, the family moved to St. Louis, Missouri, which became their final home as a family.9
