Theresa Carney1
b. October 1860, d. 19 April 1868
Father | Peter Carney b. Mar 1810, d. 25 Jan 1870 |
Mother | Julia Sester b. bt 1817 - 1818, d. 1878 |
Birth* | Theresa Carney was born in October 1860, daughter of Peter Carney and Julia Sester.2 |
NewspaperArticle* | Theresa is mentioned in the newspaper article"A Child Severely if not Fatally Burned" published 19 April 1868 in the "Dubuque Herald" (Dubuque, Iowa). On Saturday afternoon an accident of the most distressing nature occurred to a little girl, about 8 years of age, daughter of Mr. Kearney, who lives on Main street, at the head of Blake’s Hollow. It seems the children in the vicinity had been making little fires of the dried leaves in that partially timbered region, and found it quite an interesting pastime. About four o’clock Saturday afternoon, while engaged in this amusement, her clothes caught fire, and in a moment was enveloped in flames. Her cries and screams were terrific. The first one to render her assistance was Capt. Hayden, who chanced to be surveying near by, who by wrapping her in a blanket procured from the nearest house, finally succeeded in quenching the flames. It was then found that she was burned in the most shocking manner, over a large part of her body. On her legs, arms and back, the skin and flesh came off with her clothes. All was done that could be done to relieve the agonies of the little sufferer; but her wounds are so extensive that it is against all human probabilities that she will recover.3 |
Death* | Theresa Carney died on 19 April 1868 at Dubuque, Dubuque County, Iowa, at age 7. Theresa's cause of death was accidental burning while playing with fire among dead leaves.2 |
Obituary* | Her obituary was published 21 April 1868 in the Dubuque, Dubuque County, Iowa. In this city, on Sunday the 19th inst., at 5 ½ p. m., Theresa, daughter of Peter and Julia Carney, aged 7 years and 6 months. Funeral this afternoon at 2 o’clock, from their residence in Blake’s Hollow. The remains will be interred in the cemetery on the 3rd street Bluff. Friends of the family are invited to attend.2 |
