Francis M. McCarthy, 41, of Detroit, former assistant superintendent of the Juvenile home here, died yesterday in a Detroit hospital. A native Chicagoan, he was at the Juvenile home for five years before serving as a lieutenant in the navy in World War II. Since then he had been a city probation officer in Detroit. He leaves his widow, Madeline; two daughters, Ellen and Marie; his mother, Mrs. Alice McCarthy; and two sisters. The funeral will be held Tuesday at Detroit.

John E. Reid, a Chicago lawyer and internationally acclaimed pioneer in the polygraph field, died Monday in Evenston Hospital. He was 71. Mr. Reid spent 42 years working as an inventor and innovator in so-called truth testing. In 1950, he developed one of the first psychological tests to determine the honesty of prospective business employees. The Reid Report and the Reid Survey are now used to evaluate employee honesty in businesses all over the world. Mr. Reid was best known in the field of criminology, however. He has been credited with solving more than 300 murder cases and convincing more than 5,000 thieves to confess. He established the firm of John E. Reid & Associates, Polygraph Examiners, 215 N. Dearborn St., in 1947. In the years that followed, Mr. Reid worked as a teacher, author, researcher and inventor in the field of polygraphy and interrogation. In 1954, Mr. Reid handled the testing for the first lie-detector evidence even admitted in an Illinois Court. Based on the evidence, a jury convicted a Chicago man in the death of his four-year-old daughter. Later that year, Mr. Reid went to court again. This time, evidence from his testing helped clear a cab driver charged with strangling a Chicago widow. Mr. Reid, a native South Sider, attended Loyola University and De Paul University, where he was a guard on the 1933 football team. Mr. Reid joined the Chicago Police Department in 1939, the same year he was admitted as a lawyer to the Illinois bar. He later became the first police officer assigned to the Chicago crime laboratory after the city took it over from Northwestern University. From 1942 to 1947, Mr. Reid was in charge of lie tests at the police lab. He first attracted national attention in 1946, when he used the tests to clear one man and convict another in the slaying and dismembering of six-year-old Suzanne Degnan. Mr. Reid was the author of the nation’s first polygrapher licensing law. He was a member of several organizations, including the Chicago Crime Commission’s special agent’s association. He is survived by his wife, Margaret; two brothers, Dr. Martin and Dr. Stephen; and a sister, Elizabeth Purtell. Mass will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church, 2324 W. Genevieve Garvey, the first female stock broker in Hollywood, died Friday at her daughter's home in Roswell, Ga. She was 81. Garvey became a registered account executive in 1954 after passing the New York Stock Exchange exam. She joined A.M. Kidder and Co. in Hollywood in August 1957 and worked as a broker until her retirement in 1974. ''I don't think it's unnatural for a woman to be in this business,'' Garvey told The Miami Herald in 1958. ''In fact, we could use more if we're going to keep up with the women who are investing.''
Born Genevieve McCarthy in Chicago, on May 6, 1918, Garvey was a graduate of Alvernia High and attended secretarial school. She began her career as an office clerk with a Chicago investment firm. Garvey was drawn to the financial world, where she saw unlimited opportunities for careers for women to serve a rising number of female investors. ''It's surprising the number of women who want to learn about investing in the stock market,'' she said in The Herald interview. Garvey won a number of sales awards while working at Kidder, according to her daughter, Gene Rowsey. ''She had a following,'' Rowsey said. ''They were very fond of her.''
Garvey married Cyril Garvey on June 17, 1939, in Chicago. After living in Peoria, Ill., and Detroit, the family moved to Hollywood in 1951 when Cyril Garvey, a sales manager for the drug maker Johnson & Johnson, was transferred to South Florida. After her retirement in 1974, Garvey moved to Lighthouse Point, where she played golf with her husband and worked as a volunteer at Coral Door, a charitable organization that works with North Broward Medical Center near Pompano Beach. She was active in St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church in Lighthouse Point and was a member of the Boca del Mar Golf Club in Boca Raton. ''She was a very strong, elegant woman, and she was kindness personified,'' Rowsey said. ''I also think she was one of the first women libbers.'' In addition to her daughter, she is survived by a son, Daniel Garvey, of Fort Collins, Colo; a sister, Sister Marian McCarthy, of Chicago; brothers, the Rev. Warren McCarthy and the Rev. James McCarthy, both of Chicago, and Daniel McCarthy, of Springfield, Ill; 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Rev. Walter E. McCarthy, 72, a Jesuit priest and educator who taught at Loyola Academy, died Sunday in Phoenix, Ariz. A native of Chicago, he taught English, history and religion at Loyola from 1961-1967. For the next two years, he taught religion to the developmentally disabled at the Wilmette school and later was convent chaplain at Academy of Our Lady in Chicago. His special gift was the cultivation of a one-to-one relationship with those entrusted to his care, particularly those handicapped in body, mind or soul,” said his brother, the Rev. Warren J. McCarthy, pastor of St. Marcelline Church in Schaumburg. “People immediately sensed his deep spirituality and flocked to him for spiritual guidance. He was admired and, above all, truly loved.” In 1974, Father McCarthy left this area to go to the Jesuit novitiate in Berkley, Mich., where he worked with novices and directed retreats for lay people. He went to Arizona to become hospital chaplain at St. Joseph Hospital in Phoenix. He also organized retreats and served as campus minister at a local high school. In 1989, he was sent to Sts. Simon and Jude Catholic Church in Phoenix as associate pastor, a post he held until his death. Father McCarthy attended St. Ignatius High School. In 1939 he entered the Jesuit noviate and was ordained in 1952. He earned his licentiate in theology from West Baden College in Indiana and a master's in religious education from Loyola University. Other relatives include two more brothers, the Rev. James H. McCarthy and Daniel, and three sisters, Sister Marian, a Dominican nun, Margaret Reid and Genevieve Garvey. Daniel Joseph McCarthy, 89, of Springfield, died at 3:40 p.m. on Oct. 19, 2015, in Springfield, Ill. A Christmas baby, Daniel was born on Dec. 25, 1925, in Chicago, to an Irish Catholic family, which would grow to have nine children: four older sisters, followed by five younger brothers, on Addison Street on the city's Northwest Side. His father, Walter, a plumber, and mother, Julie Doyle McCarthy, loved and encouraged his early curiosities about tools, engineering, science, chemistry and physics. He entered the Seminary after attending St. Rita's High School, and went on to become a fully ordained Jesuit priest, working and teaching at various Jesuit schools in the Midwest. He left the priesthood in 1967, and met and married the love of his life, Lucille "Billie" Dunne, herself a former nun, on April 30, 1969. They had two daughters and enjoyed a great love affair together. They had 39 years of happy marriage before she preceded him in death on June 30, 2008.

Daniel held degrees in both liberal arts and business, including an MBA, and worked in accounting and auditing until retirement. His true passion was his art. Dan was a masterful, self-taught woodworker. An active member of the Prairie Art Alliance, Dan had his own show at the gallery at the Hoogland Center in Springfield in 2009. His creations, often reflective of his Christian spirituality, decorate chapels, churches, offices and homes across the country.

Dan spent the last three years of his life at Concordia Village, where he made a host of friends among residents and staff alike. He often proclaimed that he never imagined his last years would be so filled with love and joy.

Above all, Dan had a kind, patient, forgiving and encouraging spirit, coupled with a dry, playful sense of humor. These qualities made him well-suited to be an outstanding husband and father, which he was. He often joked that he was surrounded by bossy women, and he was right. Throughout his life, he was cherished and loved by his mother, older sisters, wife, daughters and granddaughters.

He was also preceded in death by his parents and siblings: Margaret, Ellen, Genevieve, Walter, Warren, and Jerry. He is survived by two daughters, Megan (husband, Chad, M.D.) DeFrain of Springfield, and Siobhan McCarthy of Springfield; two grandchildren, Lucille Grace and Phoebe Sue DeFrain; and two siblings, Rev. James McCarthy of Chicago and Sr. Marion McCarthy of Sinsinawa, Wis; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Lucille "Billie" Dunne McCarthy, 76, of Springfield died at 9:10 a.m. Monday, June 30, 2008, at Heritage Manor Nursing Home. Billie was born on July 31, 1931, in Chicago, the daughter of Jeremiah and Mary Morrisroe Dunne. She made everyone with whom she came in contact with come alive. She married Daniel McCarthy in Chicago on April 30, 1968. In her 18 years as "Sister Mary Jeremy, CSJ," in the congregation of Saint Joseph in LaGrange Park, she inspired countless children and young ladies in various parish schools and at Nazareth Academy. She kept in contact with many of these former students who reflected their deep esteem and love for their former mentor years after having been directly affected by her. She loved holidays and loved to celebrate. Billie's personality went well with her beautiful red hair. She could light up a room with her clear interest in every person whose life she touched. She could go through a supermarket queue and in those few minutes know more about the highs and lows of the customers and the checker than their spouses or children. She exuded a sense of trust and care so that many found her approachable and consoling. She did not simply meet people and move on, she remembered each one with love. She could remember the names of all the students in a class 50 years after she had taught them. She had a laugh that was so contagious that those who heard her funny stories many times would still be moved to raucous laughter inspired by her laugh. Her quick intelligence and her very personal touch allowed her to be successful both in real estate sales and financial planning. She is survived by Daniel, her husband of 39 years and her daughters, Megan (husband, Chad, M.D.) DeFrain of Springfield and Siobhan (husband, Thomas) Williams of Chicago; siblings, Jerry (wife, Nancy) Dunne of Elmhurst, Patricia Dunne Giovanazzi of San Francisco; her sister-in-law, Betty Dunne of Palm Springs, Calif; and her many nieces and nephews, all of whom will miss her terribly. The Rev. Warren McCarthy helped shape the growth of Schaumburg's first Catholic church, St. Marcelline, leading the congregation as its second pastor from 1976 to 1997. He died Sunday at the age of 86. “He was a visionary,” said longtime parishioner June Bessette of Schaumburg. “He saw the needs of the parish and forged ahead, doing whatever needed to be done.”

McCarthy was ordained in 1952, and his first assignment was as assistant superintendent of Maryville Academy in Des Plaines, a position he held for five years before moving on to teach at Quigley Seminary in Chicago and later at Niles College Seminary in Mundelein. His first pastoral assignment came as an assistant pastor at St. Zachary Parish in Des Plaines before he left for St. Marcelline and his first pastorate. St. Marcelline's founding pastor, the Rev. Charles Diemer, carved the parish out of surrounding farmlands, holding Masses for two years at Robert Frost Junior High School and religious education classes at Campanelli Elementary School, both in Schaumburg, until a new church could be built. By the time McCarthy arrived eight years after the new church was finished, the facilities already were too small for the 2,500 families. In 1981, he built the Family Life Center on the back of the church, with meeting and activity rooms to help accommodate the parish's large religious education program for children. When he arrived, there were 1,700 students enrolled in classes and nearly 140 catechists. “We held classes at night and on Saturdays and Sundays, just to meet the demand,” Bessette said. “Father Warren spearheaded it; he led the training for the teachers.” Beyond the physical needs of the church campus, McCarthy also sought to meet parishioners' spiritual needs. The Rev. Hal Stanger, current pastor, said McCarthy was instrumental in developing the church as a “stewardship parish.” “It was a call to discipleship,” Stanger said, “about devoting your time, talent and treasure to the needs of the parish so it could grow.” Bessette added that McCarthy became a strong advocate for stewardship once he discovered that the weekly bingo night was taking in more money than the weekly collection. “He helped many of us examine the way we were living,” Bessette said. “His call for stewardship really touched us.” Mary Kramer, religious education director, pointed to the complete remodeling of the interior of St. Marcelline in 1997 as McCarthy's crowning achievement. He moved the altar into the middle of the worship space, consequently bringing congregants closer. He added new imagery as well as a gathering space at the entrance and a ramp to make the church handicapped accessible. “He wanted to make the church more inviting,” Kramer said, “and make it accessible for all people to enter.” McCarthy retired soon after the renovations were completed, then served on the Priests' Senate and as an archdiocesan adviser.

Visitation will begin at 3:30 p.m. today, followed by the funeral Mass at 7:30 p.m., celebrated by the Rev. Ronald Lewinski, pastor of St. Mary of the Annunciation in Mundelein. Both are at St. Marcelline Catholic Church, 822 S. Springinsguth Road.
