He was secretary of the Mercury Produce company, 139 South Water market, of which he was a co-founder. He was a navy veteran of World War II. He leaves his widow, Marie; a daughter, Patricia; his father, James; a brother, and a sister.

Mrs. Messerschmitt was preceded in death by her husband, Paul L. Visitation was held June 25 at N.H. Scott & Hebblethwaite Funeral Home, Glenview. A memorial service was held June 26.
